twitter-292988_1280Facebook is officially rolling out it’s Facebook Beacon and Place Tips to small and midsize businesses across the U.S.

In January, Facebook began piloting the Place Tips with several businesses in New York City, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Strand Book Store. They tested the feature over the past few months.

Place Tips is an optional feature for local businesses and landmarks that provides tips for users at the top of their News Feed when they enter the business.

The tips are unique to the user.  The Place Tips are also only shown to people who have given Facebook permission to access their location their phone.” (Facebook for Business)

The tips show their friends recommendations, upcoming events and posts from the business’ Facebook Page.

“To improve the customer experience, businesses can write a customizable welcome note that appears at the top of the Place Tips feed and use it to promote items or share facts and tips.”  (Facebook for Business)

Facebook has reported that the businesses using this feature have already seen an increase in Facebook Page traffic from in-store visitors in the past 6 months.

We love that someone can come into our store and check Place Tips on their phone to see that a friend of theirs has checked in here and posted photos, or even that there’s an in-store event coming up soon. Place Tips gives us a new way to connect with our customers and get our Facebook Page content in front of the people who visit us. We’ve seen some promising early results to that end.” – Briannne Sperber, Director of Marketing, Strand Book Store

The most reliable way to service Place Tips is with the Facebook Bluetooth® beacon. The beacon is a 6 centimeter diamond shaped device that businesses can attach to a wall in their location.

Recently Facebook has begun posting a notification at the top of select Facebook Pages or as a notification in the right column of a Page Admin’s News Feed for Pages that have an active Page full of content. (See Below)

The beacons are being provided at no cost – FREE.  They are doing this because this will allow more people to get useful and interesting information about the places they visit.

For more on the feature see the Facebook for Business Blog – Place Tips.
