Bill Gates helped revolutionize the computer industry and usher in a new age of technology that allows people around the world to connect. His company’s Skype platform can even translate our conversations in real-time, yet Microsoft’s co-founder says he regrets only speaking English. Recently Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed off his ability to speak Mandarin, and that led Gates to respond, “Mark Zuckerberg amazingly learned Mandarin and did a Q&A with Chinese students — incredible.”
Bill Gates in an AMA then added that he was enthusiastic about the pace of technological change, “There will be more progress in the next 30 years than ever,” he said. For example, “Mechanical robot tasks like picking fruit or moving a hospital patient will be solved.”
When the topic shifted to extending life and the topic of immortality, Gates says, “It seems pretty egocentric, while we still have malaria and TB, for rich people to fund things so they can live longer. It would be nice to live longer though, I admit.”
While Gates would love to see robots advance in terms of their usability, he also admits that they should remain fairly dumb in terms of actual intelligence. “I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern. I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don’t understand why some people are not concerned.”
Bill Gates might not speak a language other than English, but if binary counted in that discussion, his leadership at Microsoft has more than made up for his lack of a second language.
