Billionaire business magnate and humanitarian Bill Gates announced he is funding a device called the Omniprocessor, which turns human waste into clean drinking water and even electricity.

Gates wrote about the Ominprocessor on his blog, gatesnotes, Monday. He discussed the ingenuity of the invention and the importance of it in helping the poorest sections of the world where drinking water is scarce. Gates even discussed and filmed himself drinking water that was converted in the Omniprocessor.

“I watched the piles of feces go up the conveyer belt and drop into a large bin,” Gates wrote. “They made their way through the machine, getting boiled and treated. A few minutes later I took a long taste of the end result: a glass of delicious drinking water.”

Here is the video of Bill Gates testing the Omniprocessor water:

While touring the plant where the Omniprocessor did its work, Gates learned all of the science and functionality of the process. “Through the ingenious use of a steam engine,” he wrote, “it produces more than enough energy to burn the next batch of waste. In other words, it powers itself, with electricity to spare. The next-generation processor, more advanced than the one I saw, will handle waste from 100,000 people, producing up to 86,000 liters of potable water a day and a net 250 kw of electricity.”

According to research done at the U.N., there are 2.5 billion people in the world with little or no access to clean drinking water. This obviously leads to a number of health issues for people in these impoverished regions, and hopefully the Omniprocessor is a step in the right direction for these destitute regions.

Bill Gates’ Omniprocessor investment is one of many current alternative uses of human waste. For example, the Bath Bus Company in the United Kingdom announced a bus that would be powered solely on the biome thane gas “distilled from human waste.”
