College is expensive. In 2010, the average yearly cost for a 4-year institution—including tuition, room, and board—was $21,657. On average, 2,350,000 students enroll in college each year. The average college student skips class 26 times per year, gets two parking tickets per year, attends 62 parties, and budgets $2,800 for food and beverages per year. The value of college ultimately extends beyond earning that degree.
College students establish bonds with other students they meet through orientation, class, parties, and in the dorm setting. Living in close quarters helps prepare students for living with a girlfriend, boyfriend, or spouse. Some 14 percent of people actually meet their spouse in college. In addition to earning a degree (hopefully!), college students are exposed to a variety of ideas, which has value in itself. Colleges and universities reported nearly 1,500 majors in 2010 and new majors are added so universities can stay current and competitive.
Some other valuable things people learn during their college years: how to sleep anywhere, how to eat ramen every day, how to function on minimal sleep, and how to live with roommates.
