Money talks in football and despite new Financial Fair Play restrictions coming into force this summer the Premier League’s clubs continue to splash their cash in the transfer window.
Manchester City are the summer’s big spenders, outlaying £97m on new talent. Tottenham, desperate to return to the Champions League, have also spent big. Andre Villas-Boas has been trusted with £51m of Daniel Levy’s money and the boss will expect an immediate return on his new assets.
So where does all this money go? Spanish players have been bought for a total of £85m while Brazilians make up £40m of the total spend in the Premier League. The British players have also moved around, with Andy Carroll leading the way for a top English striker at £15m between Liverpool and West Ham, while Stuart Downing has also gone the same way.
New Norwich striker Gary Hooper secured a £5m move from Celtic to Carrow Road this summer and Steven Caulker makes up almost a third of Cardiff City’s £28m expenditure on new players following the full-back’s departure from Tottenham.
Interestingly, two TitanBet favourites to compete in the top four have managed to balance the books this summer. While Liverpool have spent big and offloaded players to come up with a £1m deficit, Arsenal have made a £10m surplus from the sale of Vito Mannone and Gervinho.
Yet while the Premier League transfer merry-go-round continues to turn, it’s the old boys who remain the most impactful. There are five current players who have scored over 120 top-flight goals and Frank Lampard, Chelsea’s midfield conductor who signed a new contract this summer, leads the way with 165. Wayne Rooney and Jermain Defoe – two players reportedly on the verge of leaving their clubs – boast 156 and 123 goals respectfully, while Robin van Persie is not far behind those tallies.

West Brom have possibly the best buy of the summer – drafting in 123-goal machine Nicolas Anelka – and with the Frenchman leading the line are a good early shout to steer well clear of relegation.
