Robert Griffin III, who is referred to as RG3, is an electrifying quarterback for the Washington Redskins. RG3 just finished his stellar rookie season, but he suffered a serious knee injury, which happens to be one of the most talked about sports stories in the world today. In fact, RG3 probably has the most famous knee in the U.S. these days. His injury required three surgeries that when done together “comprise a major surgery that leads to an extremely painful and arduous recovery,” according to Dr. Mark Adickes. Adickes is an orthopedic surgeon who performed RG3’s first ACL operation in 2009.
RG3 may have the most famous knee problem in the country, but such problems are very common all throughout the U.S. In 2006, about 12 million U.S. doctor’s visits were for knee problems. Twenty percent of American adults reported suffering knee pain in 2009. An impatient knee operation, such as one to repair ligaments can easily cost up to a whopping $10,000. The total annual cost of knee replacements comes out to $9 billion.
Tom Brady, Tiger Woods, Mariano Rivera, and Derrick Rose have also torn their ACLs. Annually, there are between 150,000 and 300,000 ACL injuries in the U.S.—about half of which require reconstructive surgery. The annual estimated cost for surgery and rehabilitation is $5 billion. Recovery time from such injuries usually ranges from 6 weeks to 6 months.
