Out with the pencil and paper, in with the smartphones, tablets and laptops. Elementary, middle and high school students already use mobile devices for doing homework and checking assignments, and they believe these devices can improve their education.
Though a substantial portion of students already use mobile devices in the classroom, seven out of 10 students would like to use mobile devices more in school, according to the Pearson Ed Student Mobile Device Survey released in May. Nine in 10 students think tablets will change the way they learn in the future and think they make learning more fun.
Teachers agree. Ninety-six percent of educators say mobile devices in the classroom increases students’ engagement. However, education budget cuts in the past few years mean purchasing more technology for the classroom often isn’t possible. So some schools in Ohio, Texas, Minnesota and Georgia have asked students to BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) with some success, though only 11 percent of all classrooms in the U.S. are currently utilizing BYOD programs.
