The LG G Flex 2 is the curved smartphone that LG wanted to debut at CES 2014. It’s a year late, but the wait was worth the anticipation.

The new G Flex 2 is smaller than its first generation counterpart, measuring in at a less robust 5.5 inches (compared to 6-inches on the original). The 1080P display on the new model is also sharper, allowing for better viewing from almost every angle, while maintaining clarity that was lacking on the original device. The display is also covered with a special coating on top of its Gorilla Glass, allowing for a 20% more durable design.

LG has also upgraded the device to better absorb shock, and the company claims that the awesome self-healing back is now much faster at repairs when scratched or dinged.

The biggest advantage in the LG G Flex 2 is the faster interface. Last year I noted that the device was sluggish and other reviewers agreed. This time around the company has thrown in a 64-bit Qualcomm QCOM -1.10% 810 processor that makes everything seem faster and more enjoyable to use. It doesn’t hurt that LG threw out all of its annoying promotional widgets and company[based interface tweaks. Users are not given a more robust and streamlined Google Android 5.0 Lollipop to sink their teeth into. While LG does have its own touches, they are more elegant and actually welcomed.

The device is currently slated for two colors, red or black.

The company also claims that the 13-megapixel camera on the device has been much improved. However, it is the front facing camera that really caught my attention, not because of its sub-par 2.1 megapixel camera (unacceptable in the selfie age for a high-end device), but rather because of the easy of use featured via LG’s gesture controls. When I made an open hand to closed fist gesture the device automatically started a three second timers and when I brought the phone to my face, it quickly launched a preview.

The LG G Flex 2 is not perfect, I would really like the device to bend freely and then form back to its original design. However, it is fast, heals more quickly, and offers a better user experience in terms of UI.

On the connectivity side the G Flex 2 offers 4G / LTE / HSPA+ 21/42 Mbps, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth Smart Ready (Apt-X) 4.1, NFC, SlimPort, A-GPS / Glonass, and USB 2.0. All that tech fits into a curved design that measures just 5.87 x 2.96 x 0.27in (at the thinnest spot) – 0.37 (at the thickest spot) (149.1 x 75.3 x 7.1 – 9.4mm).
