Newest Version of the 3DS

Today, Wednesday January 14th 2015, the latest Nintendo press conference was full of surprises, release dates, and plenty of ways that all gamers will be throwing money at the video game giant. From new games to release dates, this live stream was a perfect example of why Nintendo is still relevant, listening to their fans, and overall a great game developer.

Upcoming Release Dates:

Announcing new games only means so much if you don’t know when you will be able to play them. Today’s Nintendo press conference finally gave a release date for the upcoming “New Nintendo 3DS XL” which is a higher-powered 3DS with a second analog stick on the right side. This updated console will be released on February 13th in the USA and in Europe. Right now only the XL version has been announced, and many people are wondering why there are no regular-sized models for Western fans. A special edition Majora’s mask model was also announced, but sold out almost instantly.

Speaking of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, that too will be released on February 13th. Those lucky enough to pre-order the Collector’s Edition will receive a Skull Kid figurine, but as with the console, most places are already sold out. The next title in the Popular Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will also be released on February 13th and will get a limited-edition special 3DS to go alongside it. Nintendo’s new IP, Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. also has a release date – March 13th. The game is a new venture from the developer, and is tactical RPG. Fire Emblem Amiibo figures are expected to work in the new game.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, a 3DS remake of the game Xenoblade Chronicles, will launch on April 2nd only for the new 3DS consoles. Some fans are upset at the game won’t work on older 3DS models, as it is exclusive to the newer version.

Additionally, the Nintendo press conference gave Mario Party 10 a release date of March 20th and Amiibos will be usable with it. The new shooter, Splatoon, will be released in May.

New Games and Accessories:

Popular strategy RPG series Fire Emblem is getting another entry. There is no title or release date, but the Nintendo press conference did show an entertaining teaser trailer that gives people an idea of the combat and story.

Since so many Wii games are still expensive even used, as some of the more popular titles are discontinued, Nintendo will be bringing some of them to the WiiU via virtual console. The first will be Super Mario Galaxy 2 which is available today, Punch-Out on January 22nd, and then the Metroid Prime Trilogy on January 29th. These games are still considered to be some of the best in years, and now gamers won’t have to spend $30-$60 on these just to play them.

Amiibos are quickly becoming incredibly popular and a few are already collector’s items. Marth from Fire Emblem was one of the first released, and has sold out across the country. Prices for the figure have gone up to $100 or more online, so to counter that Nintendo announced they will be shipping out more units at a later date. Another wave of Amiibos will be released at a later date as well. This line will include Robin, Lucina, Pac-Man, Wario, Charizard, and Ness. A separate Super Mario Series Amiibo will be released March 20th and will include Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, and Toad.

Coming March 29th in Japan and later 2015 in the West, Xenoblade Chronicles X at least got a new trailer today, highlighting gameplay and exploration.

Nintendo’s YouTube channel has plenty of videos showcasing these new games, release dates, and previews. There hasn’t been any information on the next Nintendo Direct, but hopefully there will be at least one more before E3 to talk about spring and summer releases.
