We have compared the prices of a pint of beer, a glass of wine, taxi fares, a 3 course meal, a room in a 4 star hotel and a room in a hostel. We have listed these costs for four continents and various cities, with some very surprising results. Based on these facts, London is the most expensive city, outpricing even New York when it comes to the cost of a four star hotel room. Only Stockholm charges more to stay in a hostel than London, so if you are thinking of a cheap, backpacking holiday this year the hostels in Egypt could be worth looking at as they are the cheapest.
With the USA now the second favourite summer holiday destination with British holidaymakers it might be worth noting that it is also an expensive country to visit. Taking the cost of long haul flights out of the equation, the African continent is cheapest overall, with the Egyptian resort of Sharm El Sheikh having the lowest total cost at only £109. Asia and Oceania also compare quite favourably, but unfortunately Europe turns out to be the most expensive continent to visit.
