Video game streaming platform Twitch was serving 100 million monthly unique viewers by the end of 2014. The Amazon owned company served 45 million monthly users in 2013 and 20 million monthly viewers in 2013.
Amazon acquired Twitch in August 2014 for $1.1 billion and most of the company’s growth appears to have occurred since that time. At the time of the acquisition Twitch was serving 55 million monthly viewers.
100 million monthly views is pretty impressive for a company that YouTube said would likely generate 4.7 million gamer viewers monthly. Since that statement in 2011, the company has benefited from the rise in eSports, largely thanks to organizations such as the League of Legends.
Twitch has also matured, adding live music concerts and documentary movies into its portfolio.
The platform’s new numbers show that viewership is growing faster than the number of broadcasters who share their gaming skills with Twitch’s audience. From 2012 through 2013 the number of broadcasters surged from 300,000 to 900,000. In 2014 that number increased by 600,000 to a cool 1.5 million viewers.
Twitch shares revenue with expert gamers with that number increasing from 5,100 in 2013 to 10,000 in 2014.
Do you think Twitch can maintain its massive increases in monthly viewers and its decent increase in broadcasters?
