Is a .ai Domain Worth It for Your Small Business?

Quick answer: A .ai domain is worth it if AI is part of what your business sells, or if you want a second address that protects a name you already use. For most small businesses, .com should stay the main address. A .ai name costs more than a .com and is registered for two years at a time, so it has to earn its place.

Below: what .ai actually is, how Google treats it, who it fits, what it costs, and how to pick and register a name that works.

What is a .ai domain?

.ai is the country code for Anguilla, an island in the Caribbean. The IANA root zone record for .ai lists it as a country-code domain managed by the Government of Anguilla.

Most people read the two letters as artificial intelligence, and that is why .ai took off. By January 2026, .ai had passed one million registered names, according to an announcement by the Government of Anguilla that Domain Name Wire reported on January 28, 2026.

What that means for you: a .ai address tells visitors your business has something to do with AI. In our view, that helps when it is true and confuses people when it is not.

Does a .ai domain hurt your search ranking?

No. Google treats .ai as a generic extension, the way it treats .com, so a .ai address does not tell Google your site is meant for Anguilla. Google lists .ai among the country codes it handles this way in its guide to multi-regional sites (updated December 10, 2025).

It will not lift your ranking on its own, either. The extension is the address; what ranks is what is on the page. We recommend the extension your customers will remember and type correctly, and then putting your effort into the site itself.

Who should get a .ai domain, and who should not?

Our rule of thumb: choose .ai when AI is part of what you sell, not just a tool you use.

Your situationOur recommendation
You sell an AI product or service, such as an AI tool, a chatbot setup service or AI training.ai can be your main address. It tells visitors what you do before they click.
You run a local or service business, such as a bakery, a dental office or a landscaping crewKeep .com as your main address. It is the one your customers are most likely to guess.
You already own the .com of your business nameRegister the matching .ai if it is available, so nobody else can, and point it to your main site.
You are launching a side project built around AI.ai makes a memorable launch address. Budget for the two-year registration.
Your .com is taken and AI has nothing to do with your businessSkip .ai and look at other extensions in our guide to domain name suffixes.

Owning more than one extension is a common way to keep your name safe. Our guide to owning multiple domains explains how to make several addresses work together, and should your domain name match your business name? helps if you are still choosing the name itself.

How much does a .ai domain cost?

More than a .com, and you pay for two years at once. Turbify sells .ai as a two-year registration, and both years are charged at checkout.

How do you pick a .ai name that works?

Treat it like any domain name: short, easy to say, easy to spell. Then run these checks before you register.

  1. Say it out loud. People hear the ending as dot A I. Read the full address to a friend and ask them to type it.
  2. Keep it short. One or two words beat a phrase. Our domain name checklist covers length, numbers and hyphens.
  3. Make sure the name is not someone else’s brand. Search the USPTO trademark database first, especially if the name includes a well-known AI product.
  4. Look for the matching .com. If it is available too, register both and point one to the other.
  5. Let AI Domain Search suggest names. Describe your business in a sentence and AI Domain Search suggests names that are available.

How do you register a .ai domain with Turbify?

  1. Go to turbify.com/domains.
  2. Type the name you want, or describe your business and let AI Domain Search suggest an available one.
  3. Choose the .ai result and check out. The two-year registration is charged at checkout.
  4. Decide where the name points. Every Turbify domain can show a free one-page website built with AI, or you can redirect it to the site you already have. Our help center shows how to set up domain redirects.

Every Turbify domain includes free WHOIS privacy, which keeps your personal contact details out of the public domain record, and Business Mail, so you can send email from your new address.

When you are ready for a full website, Turbify web hosting includes the free AI Website Builder: describe your business in a sentence and get a first draft in about 60 seconds.

Quick answers

Does a .ai domain make sense if my business does not sell AI?

Usually only as a second address that protects your name. As a main address, it suggests you sell something built on AI.

Is a .ai domain good for SEO?

It is neutral. Google treats .ai as a generic extension, like .com, so it does not tie your site to Anguilla, and it does not rank you higher by itself.

Why do I pay for two years when I register a .ai domain?

Turbify sells .ai as a two-year registration, and the full term is charged at checkout. The first-year price covers year one; year two is charged at the renewal rate.

Can I use a .ai domain for email?

Yes. Business Mail comes with every Turbify domain, so you can send and receive email at your .ai name.

Does the first-year price apply when I renew?

No. First-year prices cover year one of the two-year registration. After that, the domain renews at the then current rate shown on turbify.com/domains.

Your next step

Decide which job the .ai name has: your main address because you sell AI, or a second address that protects your name. Then search for it, and if the .com is available too, take both.

Your ideal domain name is a search away. Find it with Turbify’s AI Domain Search, with free WHOIS privacy and Business Mail included. Search for a domain.
