Quick answer: If AI is what you sell and the name is available, make .ai your main address and register the matching .com to protect it. If your buyers are local or not technical, keep .com as the main address and point the .ai to it. Pick .io mainly when your buyers are developers.
Below: what each ending actually is, how Google treats it, how the three compare side by side, and the order to register them in.
What is the real difference between .ai, .com and .io?
The difference is where each ending comes from and what people assume when they see it. The IANA record for .com lists it as a generic domain run by Verisign. It is not tied to any place.
The other two are country codes. The IANA record for .ai ties it to Anguilla, and the IANA record for .io ties it to the British Indian Ocean Territory. Most people never think about that. They read .ai as artificial intelligence and .io as input and output, a term from computing.
What that means for you: the ending works like a label on your shop door. Choose the one your customers will read correctly.
Does Google treat .ai and .io differently from .com?
No, not for where you can rank. Google treats both .ai and .io as generic, the way it treats .com, so neither one tells Google your site is meant for one country. Both appear on the list of country codes handled this way in its guide to multi-regional sites (updated December 10, 2025), and Google says that list may change.
So do not pick an ending for search reasons. Pick it for the people who will read it and type it, then put your effort into the site itself.

Which one should your business pick?
Our rule of thumb: match the ending to what the customer is buying. We recommend it because a mismatch costs you a click or a sale, and the ending is the first thing a stranger reads.
- You sell an AI product or service. Use .ai as the main address if your name is available, and register the .com too. Our guide to whether a .ai domain is worth it covers who it fits and who should skip it.
- You use AI, but you sell something else. A bakery that uses AI for its marketing still sells bread. Keep .com as the main address.
- You sell software to developers. .io is a fair choice for that audience. If your buyers are business owners rather than engineers, we would choose .ai or .com, because more of them will read those correctly.
- Your first-choice .com is taken. Change the name before you settle for an ending that does not fit. Our guide to domain name suffixes shows the other options.
Should you register more than one?
Yes, if you can afford it and the name matters to you. A second ending stops someone else from taking it and catches people who guess wrong. Our guide to owning multiple domains explains how to run them together.
Register in this order:
- The address you will put on your site, your email and your business cards.
- The .com of the same name, if that is not already your main address.
- The .ai of the same name, if your business has anything to do with AI.
Then point the extras to your main site, so there is one real address to keep up. Our help center shows how to set up domain redirects.
Before you pay for any of them, run the name through the USPTO trademark database. This matters more with AI names, which often borrow from well-known products. Our domain name checklist covers the other checks.

Quick answers
Is .ai a stronger choice than .com for an AI startup?
For a business that sells AI, we think .ai says what you do faster. Register the .com as well if you can, because some people will type it out of habit.
Is .io still a good choice?
For software sold to developers, yes. For most small businesses, it is a harder ending to explain than .com or .ai.
Will a .ai or .io address hurt my ranking outside those countries?
No. Google treats both as generic, so neither one ties your site to a country.
Can I change my main address later?
Yes, but it takes work: new email addresses, new business cards and redirects from the old address. That is why it pays to choose well now.
Your next step
Write down what you sell in one sentence. If AI is in that sentence, search for the .ai first. If it is not, search for the .com.
