WordPress has officially released version 6.8, codenamed “Cecil,” in honor of the avant-garde jazz pianist Cecil Taylor. This latest update emphasizes refined design tools, improved performance, and strengthened security measures.
Key Features of WordPress 6.8 “Cecil”
- Revamped Style Book: The Style Book now offers a structured layout with clearer labels, facilitating easier editing of site-wide styles. Notably, it extends support to Classic themes equipped with editor-styles or a theme.json file, allowing users to preview theme changes seamlessly.
- Speculative Loading: WordPress 6.8 “Cecil” introduces speculative loading to enhance navigation speed, which preloads links upon hover or click. This feature aims to deliver near-instant page loads, improving the overall user experience.
- Enhanced Password Security: The update implements bcrypt password hashing, significantly increasing resistance to brute-force attacks. This change and other encryption improvements strengthen the platform’s security framework.
- Accessibility Improvements: Over 100 accessibility enhancements have been made, affecting various aspects of the WordPress experience. These include updates to bundled themes, navigation menu management, the customizer, and simplified labeling. The Block Editor sees over 70 improvements, enhancing blocks, DataViews, and overall user interaction.
- Performance Upgrades: Beyond speculative loading, WordPress 6.8 introduces performance fixes targeting the block editor, block type registration, and query caching. The Interactivity API is also introduced, aiming to reduce interaction delays to under 50 milliseconds.
This release completes efforts from over 900 contributors across more than 60 countries, including over 250 first-time contributors. Their collaboration resulted in more than 320 enhancements and fixes, underscoring the strength of the WordPress open-source community.
